Avro
A.V. Roe Canada Ltd. (AVRO Aircraft) was established in 1945 in Malton Ontario.
AVRO Aircraft designed new fighters for the RCAF and transport aircraft for
Trans-Canada Airlines. In 1946 Orenda Engines was formed to develop jet engines.
In the 1950s the CF-100 Canuck interceptor was designed and in operation
with the RCAF. The Avrocar Flying Saucer and the C-102 jetliner
were designed and test flown. Other supersonic interceptor jet projects led
to the design and development of the CF-105 Arrow. The first Arrow (RL 201)
was finished in late 1957 but just over a year later in February 1959 the entire
Arrow program was cancelled by the Canadian Government. In 1962, AVRO Aircraft
closed its Malton Aircraft Division where Orenda Aerospace Corp. still carries
on the tradition of innovation.
Austin Airways Limited
Canadas oldest airline was founded by Chuck and Jack Austin in 1934 and
was based on Ramsey Lake in Sudbury Ontario after 1938. Austin Airways played
a leading role in the development of Northern Ontario. It started out mainly
flying mining executives to remote northern sites but quickly diversified into
hauling freight, fighting forest fires, training pilots, transporting tourists,
aerial photography, surveying and prospecting. Austin was the employer of legendary
pilot Thurston (Rusty) Blakey who logged over 30 000 hours in the air for the
company in his 49 years with them.
De Havilland Aircraft of Canada
Founded in 1928, de Havilland Canada became one of the worlds great aircraft
manufacturers. Starting out assembling British made Moth* Airplanes which made
flying accessible and popular in Canada the company went on to design
and produce bush utility, military and commuter aircraft. Their most famous
designs include the Chipmunk,* Beaver,* Otter,* Twin Otter,* Caribou,* Buffalo,*
Dash 7,* and Dash 8* Airplanes. DHC coined the term STOL (Short Take Off and
Landing) which was the most important capability of many of their designs. DHC
was absorbed but lives on in the great Canadian Company Bombardier.
